Garlic and Butter Flatbread

Soft, flavorful, and ready in minutes – this easy flatbread recipe brings together the comforting taste of fresh bread with the irresistible aroma of garlic and butter.

Ingredients

  • 350g all-purpose flour (plus more for dusting)

  • 250g plain yogurt (Greek or regular)

  • 1 tsp baking powder

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1 tsp sugar

  • 2 cloves of garlic

  • 30g unsalted butter

  • Optional: A touch of oil for cooking

Preparation

1. Make the Dough

Begin by sifting the flour into a large mixing bowl. Create a well in the center and add the yogurt, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Using a spoon or your hands, start mixing from the center, gradually incorporating the flour from the edges into the wet ingredients. Continue mixing until a soft dough begins to form.

2. Knead and Rest

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it for a few minutes until smooth and elastic. Divide the dough into 8 equal portions, then roll each one into a ball. Let the dough balls rest for 5–10 minutes, covered with a clean kitchen towel to prevent drying out.

3. Roll Out the Flatbreads

On a floured surface, roll each dough ball into a thin round disk, about 2–3 mm thick. For easier handling and cooking, place a piece of baking paper between each rolled-out flatbread to keep them from sticking together.

4. Cook the Flatbreads

Heat a non-stick skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat (level 7–8 out of 9). Lightly grease the pan with a bit of oil if desired. Cook each flatbread for about 1 minute per side, or until golden spots appear and it puffs up slightly. Flip and cook the other side in the same way. Transfer to a plate and cover with a clean towel to keep warm.

5. Add the Garlic Butter

While the flatbreads are still hot, brush each one generously with melted butter. Peel the garlic cloves and either rub them directly onto the surface of the warm bread or finely chop them and sprinkle over the top. The residual heat will gently mellow the garlic, releasing its fragrance into the buttery bread.

Serving Suggestions

These flatbreads are best enjoyed immediately while they’re warm, soft, and full of flavor. Serve them as a side to:

  • Creamy soups

  • Curries and stews

  • Grilled meats and kebabs

  • Fresh salads and mezze spreads

  • Or simply enjoy them on their own!

Note: Once cooled, the flatbreads may become firmer, so they’re best eaten fresh off the pan. If you have leftovers, reheat them in a dry pan or microwave briefly to restore softness.

Optional Additions

Want to elevate your flatbreads further?

  • Mix chopped herbs like parsley or coriander into the dough

  • Sprinkle sesame seeds or za’atar over the top

  • Add shredded cheese while cooking for a gooey twist

  • Stir crushed garlic directly into the melted butter for a richer flavor
